Safety Tips

Living by yourself:-

Provide plenty of light around every door to your house-
Providing No Visual For Strangers (keep your shades / blinds closed especially at night)-
Avoiding telling people that you live alone (except closed friend & family).-
Regularly check in with a Safety Buddy (if something goes wrong - if you don't make it home, or get very sick, or injure yourself - there will be nobody there to notice but your buddy may become alert and check on you.)-
If possible, inform one or two friends about your late night schedule so they can raise an alarm if they can't reach you for a while.

 Travelling by yourself:-

Arrive during the day if possible-
Be an alert traveler (never wear headphones while travelling late; it cuts you off from the outside world and may give the impression that you are not alert, making you a vulnerable target)-
If you are using public transport, avoid discussing personal details on the phone-
While driving alone, lock yourself up in the car and don't ever give lifts to strangers-
Don't let the taxi driver take a 'shortcut' through unknown area and be more careful if he has been chatty along the way (distracting your attention or phishing for your information)-
Text your friend the license plate of the cab you take-
Never share taxis with strangers at night -
Always keep cell phone charged while on the move.-
Keep close friends, colleagues and family informed: Make sure they all have your home address. -
Keep a friend's number on speed dial. -
If you are travelling out of town, keep your family and friends informed (leave an itinerary), send regular emails/text so that people at home know about where you are, and call them when you get back. -
Get a habit of calling/texting in for safety checks with trusted friends & family. Make sure that a detailed family member knows who you’re with, where you may be, when you will be home. By permitting into this habit now, someone can become alarmed in case you wander away-
If you travel over sea, you can also register your trip with the Department of State online (https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/home.asp). Registering a trip means that the embassy knows of your presence in a country; this can be especially helpful when traveling in dangerous areas or in the event of a natural disaster.
